Organizations & Activities

Northwood University encourages students to become involved in clubs and organizations, and to actively participate in activities that develop team building and interpersonal skills. To receive EXCEL credit or hours towards an EXCEL credit, approved activities and organizations must meet the following criteria:

  1. Members must be in a recognized and approved university organization, varsity athletic team, professional organization, or community-based organization.
  2. Northwood organizations must have an advisor from the faculty or staff.
  3. Students must maintain membership for a minimum of one term. (NOTE: This is not intended to suggest that an individual will receive EXCEL credit if they join an organization and then drop out of the organization during the course of the year).
  4. Students must participate in at least 75% of the scheduled meetings and activities of the organization, as determined by the organization's president and advisor.
  5. Credit for membership in an organization or participation in an activity will be given at the end of the academic year only, and must be approved by the president and the advisor of the organization.
  6. Participation should facilitate the development of the whole person through team building and interpersonal skill development.

The Northwood Idea

We believe in a system not forced into conformity with some master plan. We believe that it is the differences among us that make us interesting and useful to each other. We think this is as true in the philosophical and artistic as it is in the economic realm. Freedom from conformity releases the juices of creativity and our differences become strengths of our association, not hindrances to our existence. Thus, we insist on a system that recognizes our differences as individuals from each other, and turns those differences to positive use rather than attempting to eliminate them.
