Business Preparation

A successful job search entails four basic components:
  1. Organization
  2. Hard work
  3. Ingenuity
  4. Persistence

Knowing how to pursue a job effectively can be as important as the position's required qualifications. Career Services provides necessary insights to enable students and alumni to search for employment more effectively.

Self-Assessment and Goal Setting
  • Assess interests, skills, experiences, knowledge, and attributes
  • Determine career objectives
  • Define goals
  • Identify career fields
  • Prioritize career options
Prepare Necessary Tools: Resumes and Cover Letters

Resumes and cover letters must create a strong first impression as both serve as a means to market yourself effectively to prospective employers.  Several drafts will be necessary before you develop a resume that best reflects your abilities, skills, and educational background.  Career Services can assist you in evaluating and revising early drafts of your resumes and cover letters.

To assist you in getting started with resume and cover letter writing, we recommend the following online resources:

  • Utilize the Career Library and the Career/Business holdings in the Cook Library.
  • Look beyond the obvious and keep an open mind as you explore options.
  • Make personal contacts through faculty, family, employers, and friends.
Interviewing Skills

Your excellent resume and cover letter helped secure an interview, but it is the interview process that determines whether you will be offered the job you are seeking.  This is the chance to make your most positive impression - effective preparation is essential.  You want to feel confident, prepared for any interview question, and have done significant research about the company/organization.
