Welcome to Women's Seahawk Basketball

The Lady Seahawks, coming off an 18-13 record in their inaugural campaign, enter their second season of competition with all thirteen letter winners returning and the addition of one talented transfer. Northwood will look to build upon its success in 2006-07, when it shared the FSC regular season championship with the Savannah College of Art and Design and held the number one seed in the conference tournament.

The Lady Seahawks are led by all-conference honorees Bari Levy (Jupiter, Fla.), Kara Otterbine (Wayne, N.J.) and Katie Vican (Wrightsville, Pa). Levy averaged 10.2 ppg and was one of the leading three-point threats in the FSC. Otterbine brings her 10.2 ppg and team leading 7.4 rpg back to anchor the Seahawks inside attack. Vican, the FSC’s 2006-07 Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year, returns 14.8 ppg and 6.8 rpg to the Seahawks lineup. Vican garnered Conference Player of the Week honors on three different occasions and Levy earned the honor once.

Fourth leading scorer Christina Daniels brings her 5.5 ppg average to the wing and is joined by Caitlin Noble (Murrysville, Pa.), last year’s best defender. The point guard trio of Sara Malone (Albany, N.Y.), Sissy Ryan (Wellington, Fla.) and Taylor Wencis (Allen, Texas) who combined for 8.1 ppg and 5.1 apg, return to quarterback the Lady Seahawks attack.

Katy Kettner (Palm Bay, Fla.) last year’s Most Improved Player will impact the front court as will Amanda Sweat (Hilliard, Fla.) who had several clutch performances in the Seahawks stretch run last year. The perimeter game is strengthened by the return of Jessica Cooley (Birch Run, Mich.) whose late game heroics sealed last season’s exciting victory over Lynn University, Katie Brunck (Bergenfield, N.J.), the squad’s best perimeter shooter, and Neela Dharamdas (Coral Springs, Fla.), a multi-position contributor. The newest addition to the Lady Seahawks is Alex Axam (Lake Worth, Fla.) a physical wing performer who transferred from national NCAA DII power Florida Gulf Coast.

“We are blessed with a full roster of players who have now seen action in college basketball,” said head coach John Thurston. “We will continue to refine and upgrade our system to take advantage of our skills and depth.”

Northwood will once again face a demanding schedule as the 2007-08 slate features 28-games, including fifteen home contests at the Student Life Center and 12 Florida Sun Conference tilts. A two game road swing up north to New Jersey, a return to the Lynn Holiday Classic and the Seahawks’ own Marketing Depot USA Classic help make this year’s schedule attractive and challenging.

“While the schedule is certainly challenging, with two less games we will be able to spend more time in preparation than we did last year,” commented Coach Thurston.
