Physical Education Course Descriptions

PE 101: Intercollegiate Football, 1 credit

This course provides a study of the theory and principles of sports; rules techniques and equipment related to the conduct of the game; etiquette, sportsmanship and the appreciation of competition as character-building elements. Participation in the Intercollegiate series is subject to varsity squad and conference rules.

Goals and Objectives
By the end of this course, Northwood wants students to:

  1. Understand the dynamics of working as a group to achieve a common goal.
  2. Have learned the skills related to football and practice them with proper safety elements.
  3. Know and will follow the rules of the game while being a positive representative of Northwood University.
  4. Understand the importance of following team rules and disciplining oneself to follow training rules.
  5. Have reached full potential in the classroom and excel to the highest degree possible.
  6. Have developed their body physically, mentally, and spiritually.
  7. Know the importance of preparation in all assigned tasks.
  8. Know the importance of a solid work ethic in all aspects of one's life.
  9. Understand the principle of self-accountability and that everyone is responsible for their actions.
  10. Know how to compete on a daily basis in pushing oneself to reach his highest performance.
  11. Be able to appreciate the elements of intercollegiate competition and to be thankful for these opportunities.
  12. Be able to take the lessons learned from being associated with the Northwood University football team and apply them to situations that one faces in life after graduation.
PE 102: Intercollegiate Basketball, 1 credit

This course provides a study of the theory and principles of sports; rules techniques and equipment related to the conduct of the game; etiquette, sportsmanship and the appreciation of competition as character-building elements. Participation in the Intercollegiate series is subject to varsity squad and conference rules.

Goals and Objectives
By the end of this course, Northwood wants students to:

  1. Understand the theoretical concepts of individual and team offensive and defensive skills involved in participation at the intercollegiate level.
  2. Be able to demonstrate the various fundamentals of individual offensive and defensive play. Required at the intercollegiate level.
  3. Be able to execute solid work habits and fundamental skills through repetitive skill work.
  4. Be exposed to high level of physical conditioning, and strength training to improve their own and the overall team's productivity, at the NCAA Division II level.
  5. Understand completely the importance of team unity and team play.
  6. Have been exposed to the various strategies pertinent to successful basketball.
  7. Have received a thorough understanding of various offensive and defensive schemes.
  8. Have developed a thorough understanding of the playing rules, GLIAC and NCAA Regulation.
  9. Understand the importance of responsibility, dependability, and reliability on all individuals and their role within the team concept.
  10. Have gained insight of the importance of breaking down specific skills to apply it to the overall team concept.
  11. Understand the importance and pride in representing Northwood University in a professional manner as a positive role model.
  12. Have been exposed to a broad level of competition, travel, and experience at the collegiate level.
PE 103: Intercollegiate Baseball, 1 credit

This course provides a study of the theory and principles of sports; rules techniques and equipment related to the conduct of the game; etiquette, sportsmanship and the appreciation of competition as character-building elements. Participation in the Intercollegiate series is subject to varsity squad and conference rules.

Goals and Objectives
By the end of this course, Northwood wants students to:

  1. Have developed the various skills involved in playing intercollegiate baseball.
  2. Have grown as an athlete and as a person.
  3. Have represented Northwood University in a positive manner at all times.
  4. Have developed solid work habits and understand the team concept.
  5. Be able to take the Northwood baseball experience and use it in life's endeavors in a meaningful way.
PE 104: Intercollegiate Golf, 1 credit

This course provides a study of the theory and principles of sports; rules techniques and equipment related to the conduct of the game; etiquette, sportsmanship and the appreciation of competition as character-building elements.  Participation in the Intercollegiate series is subject to varsity squad and conference rules.

Goals and Objectives
By the end of this course, Northwood wants students to:

  1. Understand the importance of competition and sportsmanship, and how they relate to life in general.
  2. Have been exposed to people from different parts of the country.
  3. Understand and appreciate the importance of hard work.
  4. Appreciate the opportunity of playing golf at the collegiate level.
PE 105: Intercollegiate Tennis, 1 credit

This course provides a study of the theory and principles of sports; rules techniques and equipment related to the conduct of the game; etiquette, sportsmanship and the appreciation of competition as character-building elements. Participation in the Intercollegiate series is subject to varsity squad and conference rules.

Goals and Objectives
By the end of this course, Northwood wants students to:

  1. Have strengthened tennis strokes.
  2. Have fully developed game strategies.
  3. Have competed competitively against other athletes.
  4. Know how to compete under stressful situations.
  5. Understand that doing one's best is a great achievement.
  6. Understand that values and character should never be compromised to achieve success.
  7. Have learned inner strength.
  8. Understand that relying on oneself and recognize that one is an integral part of a working team.
  9. Know acceptable court demeanor.
  10. Understand and demonstrate good sportsmanship.
  11. Possess time management skills.
PE 106: Intercollegiate Lacrosse, 1 credit

This course provides a study of the theory and principles of sports; rules techniques and equipment related to the conduct of the game; etiquette, sportsmanship and the appreciation of competition as character-building elements. Participation in the Intercollegiate series is subject to varsity squad and conference rules.

Goals and Objectives
By the end of this course, Northwood wants students to:

  1. Have completed an entire collegiate season of lacrosse, attending all games, practices, pre-season conditioning and weight training.
  2. Have represented the university as a student athlete and performed that function with dignity and good judgment.
  3. Have developed a sense of commitment to the Northwood Lacrosse program and to the university as an academic and social institution.
PE 107: Intercollegiate Track, 1 credit

This course provides a study of the theory and principles of sports; rules techniques and equipment related to the conduct of the game; etiquette, sportsmanship and the appreciation of competition as character-building elements. Participation in the Intercollegiate series is subject to varsity squad and conference rules.

Goals and Objectives
By the end of this course, Northwood wants students to:

  1. Have developed the physiological and neuro-physiological systems of the body to peak performance.
  2. Know how to strive to be successful in situations demanding commitment and perseverance.
  3. Be able to incorporate and practice the several mental training methods.
  4. Have obtained individual and team goals in the athletic field.
  5. Have represented Northwood University in a positive manner in many settings.
  6. Be able to contribute to the team in any manner to finish as high as possible in regular season competition, conference championships, and Regional and National competition.
PE 108: Intercollegiate Softball, 1 credit

This course provides a study of the theory and principles of sports; rules techniques and equipment related to the conduct of the game; etiquette, sportsmanship and the appreciation of competition as character-building elements. Participation in the Intercollegiate series is subject to varsity squad and conference rules.

Goals and Objectives
By the end of this course, Northwood wants students to:

  1. Understand the concept of softball at the intercollegiate level.
  2. Have developed the proper fundamentals of throwing, catching, fielding, hitting and base running.
  3. Understand the ASA rules that govern intercollegiate softball.
  4. Know how to be responsible, accountable and dependable with their role within the team.
  5. Understand the rules and regulations of Northwood University, the NCAA and the GLIAC in regards to NU softball.
  6. Understand the importance of good sportsmanship and being a positive role model.
PE 109: Intercollegiate Volleyball, 1 credit

This course provides a study of the theory and principles of sports; rules techniques and equipment related to the conduct of the game; etiquette, sportsmanship and the appreciation of competition as character-building elements. Participation in the Intercollegiate series is subject to varsity squad and conference rules.

Goals and Objectives
By the end of this course, Northwood wants students to:

  1. Understand the theoretical structure of the individual and team skills involved in playing intercollegiate volleyball.
  2. Be able to physically perform the necessary skills required to compete at the intercollegiate level.
  3. Be aware of the importance of developing and instilling a team concept in working towards and achieving a common goal.
  4. Understand the importance and necessity of a strong work ethic in each individual and the team as a whole.
  5. Have been exposed to a variety of methods of instruction. Such as lectures, demonstrations, video, or simulations, which enhance the intercollegiate volleyball experience.
  6. Understand the importance and necessity of representing Northwood University in a positive and professional manner at all times while representing the institution at any athletic, school, social or related function.
  7. Be exposed to the impact that the characteristics of responsibility, dependability, and reliability have on all individuals and the role they must play in both intercollegiate volleyball and life.
  8. Have been exposed to the broad overall college experience.
PE 110: Intercollegiate Cross Country, 1 credit

This course provides a study of the theory and principles of sports; rules techniques and equipment related to the conduct of the game; etiquette, sportsmanship and the appreciation of competition as character-building elements. Participation in the Intercollegiate series is subject to varsity squad and conference rules.

Goals and Objectives
By the end of this course, Northwood wants students to:

PE 113: Physical Conditioning, 1 credit

This course provides a study of the theory and principles of sports; rules techniques and equipment related to the conduct of the game; etiquette, sportsmanship and the appreciation of competition as character-building elements.

Goals and Objectives
By the end of this course, Northwood wants students to:

  1. Be able to execute solid work habits and time management skills required at the intercollegiate level.
  2. Have been exposed to various athletic and social situations during team traveling and intercollegiate competition.
  3. Understand the importance of responsibility, dependability, and reliability on all individuals and their role within the team concept.
  4. Understand the importance of representing Northwood University in a positive manner in any setting.
  5. Have the ability to demonstrate various fundamental skills required at the intercollegiate level.
  6. Have been exposed to a high level of physical conditioning and strength training to improve their own level of productivity.
  7. Know various strategies pertinent to a particular sport and position.
  8. Know the rules governing their particular sport along with the conference and NCAA II requirements.
  9. Will have been able to complete a year of intercollegiate competition.
PE 126: Soccer, 1 credit

This course provides a study of the theory and principles of sports; rules techniques and equipment related to the conduct of the game; etiquette, sportsmanship and the appreciation of competition as character-building elements.

Goals and Objectives
By the end of this course, Northwood wants students to:

  1. Have completed an entire collegiate season of soccer, attending all games, practices, pre-season conditioning and weight training.
  2. Have represented the university as a student athlete and performed that function with dignity and good judgement.
  3. Have developed a sense of commitment to the Northwood soccer program and to the university as an academic and social institution.
PE 129: Cheerleading, 1 credit

This course provides a study of the theory and principles of sports; rules techniques and equipment related to the conduct of the game; etiquette, sportsmanship and the appreciation of competition as character-building elements.

Goals and Objectives
By the end of this course, Northwood wants students to:

  1. Be able to promote spirit and perform routines (cheers/chants) at University varsity sports games.
  2. Understand team-building skills to help them understand their roles as members of an interdependent team
  3. Understand how to develop and use leadership skills.
  4. Be able to develop physical skills, including body awareness techniques, landing techniques, partner/team stunts, and spotting.
  5. Know the fundamentals of cheerleading at a college level.
  6. Know the safety guidelines for college cheerleading, as established by the National Cheerleading Association.
  7. Have been representatives of the college, able to provide support and spirit for the team they represent, through an athletic endeavor of performance, both mentally and physically.
PE 130: Hockey, 1 credit

This course provides a study of the theory and principles of sports; rules techniques and equipment related to the conduct of the game; etiquette, sportsmanship and the appreciation of competition as character-building elements.

Goals and Objectives
By the end of this course, Northwood wants students to:

  1. Be able to perform basic fundamental skills related to ice hockey and utilize proper safety techniques.
  2. Be able to incorporate individual skills with team play.
  3. Understand the rules of the games while being a positive representative of Northwood University.
  4. Understand the importance of team rules and regulations and to discipline oneself to follow them.
  5. Have the ability to compete on a daily basis and to reach their level of potential.
  6. Have been exposed to off season training methods to improve on individual and team conditioning and skills.
  7. Know and understand various strategies to be utilized in situational play.
  8. Have been able to complete a season with the hockey program and represent Northwood University as a positive role model.
  9. Have the ability to utilize techniques and skills mastered to teach others.
PE 132: Dance Team, 1 credit

Students will develop technique, work on progressions and learn the choreography process. Students will perform with precision and grace while learning to work as a team, problem solve and grow in presentation skills.  Students are expected to perform at various athletic and student services events and will develop a group competition level routine. Jazz, ballet and hip hop dance forms will be explored and incorporated into various routines.
Perquisites: The Dance Team requires previous dance experience and either independent Coach approval or acceptance through group try outs.  Students without dance back grounds will need to express their desire to learn, willingness to work hard and assume an alternate position.

Goals and Objectives
By the end of this course, Northwood wants students to:

  1. Understand universal technique terminology and the history of dance.
  2. Develop skills transferable to the business world.
  3. Learn presentation poise, an understanding and appreciation of this art medium, and it’s ability to add a special component to the athletic and entertainment industry.
