Virus Information

Where can I get Antivirus Software?

Resident Students

Symantec AntiVirus is provided free of charge to all resident students. This managed copy of Symantec AntiVirus is automatically kept up to date with the latest virus signatures through our central server. This software is automatically installed as part of our dorm PC registration process that all PCs must complete prior to being granted access to the network.

Faculty and Staff

Faculty and staff are licensed to install Symantec AntiVirus on their home computers free of charge. This unmanaged copy of Symantec AntiVirus must be kept up to date by running the LiveUpdate feature on a regular basis. You can configure LiveUpdate to download updates automatically; however, it is not configured this way by default. Faculty and staff should visit one of the following locations to checkout a CD containing Symantec AntiVirus if they wish to load it on their home computer.

What should I do if my machine is infected?

  1. Do a complete scan your computer using your Antivirus software.
  2. If a virus is detected and cleaned successfully, skip to step 4.
  3. If a virus is detected and not cleaned successfully then you should visit your antivirus vendor’s website and do the following. Viruses are increasingly difficult to remove and many now require a removal tool or very specific, manual steps in order to be properly cleaned:
    1. Visit your Antivirus vendor’s website or view Symantec’s antivirus information.
    2. Search for the name of the virus that was found.
    3. After clicking on the page regarding the virus, look for removal instructions.
    4. Print the removal instructions and follow them step-by-step - exactly as noted in the documentation.
  4. Perform another complete scan your PC to make sure the virus has been completely removed.

Students who are having difficulty cleaning an infected computer can also contact the Help Deskfor further assistance.

The Northwood Idea

We believe in a system not forced into conformity with some master plan. We believe that it is the differences among us that make us interesting and useful to each other. We think this is as true in the philosophical and artistic as it is in the economic realm. Freedom from conformity releases the juices of creativity and our differences become strengths of our association, not hindrances to our existence. Thus, we insist on a system that recognizes our differences as individuals from each other, and turns those differences to positive use rather than attempting to eliminate them.
