Enrollment

During the Fall 2007 term, there were 2,227 students registered for classes in University College courses worldwide.

Faculty

Where possible, on-campus, full-time faculty teach University College classes. At locations where full time faculty are not available, adjunct faculty with the following minimum qualifications are used:

  • A master’s degree or higher qualification.
  • Teaching experience at the college level.
  • Current business/professional experience in the course material they teach.
  • Strong supporter of the American Free Enterprise system. 
Accreditation

Northwood University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association (800.621.7440; higherlearningcommission.org).

Affiliation

Private, nonsectarian, residential, coeducational, not-for-profit.

Founding

Northwood University was established in 1959 by Dr. Arthur E. Turner and Dr. R. Gary Stauffer to teach practical career skills and business principles, based on the free enterprise concept.

Who Should Attend University College

University College is intended for highly motivated adults with specific career goals who are unable to attend full-time campus programs. The University College program allows participants to further their education without interrupting their careers. (Access to a personal computer is recommended for all University College students).

Northwood's University College Admission Requirements
  • Minimum of three to five years of relevant work experience and/or an associate's degree. (The Admissions Committee will consider applications for exceptions).
  • GPA of 2.0 (4.0 scale) or better on all prior academic work.
  • Evidence of good writing and speaking skills.
  • Official high school and all previous college transcripts. 
Graduation Requirements
  • Completion of a minimum of 180 quarter hours of coursework for the Bachelor of Business Administration degree (BBA) and 90 quarter hours for the Associate of Arts (AA) degree.
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.0 in Northwood coursework.
  • Completion of a minimum of 36 quarter hours credit (9 courses) at Northwood University. (Note: Students who attain a GPA of 3.5 or higher and desire an honors designation at graduation must complete a minimum of 44 quarter hours credit (11 courses) at Northwood University). 

University College currently operates nine outreach centers in nine states with 44 program centers throughout the U.S.

Programs are offered under two options

Individually Planned Programs:
Candidates who meet the general entrance requirements may combine the options below, if available in their geographical area, as best suits their needs and may begin coursework at any time. Some programs may require two on campus seminars of three days each and a two-hour oral/written exam with campus faculty.

Individually Planned Options are:

  1. Night courses.
  2. Weekend courses.
  3. Independent Study Exam & Projects.
  4. Daytime courses.
  5. Guest student enrollments.
  6. Limited credit by examination such as the CLEP General and Subject Exams.
  7. Courses at military sites.
  8. On-line courses.

Work Life Learning Credit
Northwood University has long believed that learning does not occur exclusively in the classroom. An individual's work/life learning may be translated into college-level credit. This learning can be evaluated for required and/or elective courses for specific degree programs. A total of up to 46 quarter hours of credit may be awarded through a Work Life Learning Portfolio evaluation.

University College provides management education to adult learners throughout the world. Students have the option of completing courses at Program Centers located in nine states within the United States or completing courses online through the Online Degree Program.
